School Counselors
Instructor: Mrs. Reese and Mr. Carter
Ashland Elementary School Counseling Program

School Counseling Services
Classroom Guidance:
Lessons provided to all students that focus on developing personal, social, and academic confidence.  (see K-5 School Counseling Curriculum under School Counseling Files).

Small Group Counseling:
Group counseling provides a safe space for growth, challenge, and support. Cooperative activities and experiential games are used to help students develop social skills and empathy. Students also develop confidence through the sense of belonging and acceptance they experience in the group. We form groups throughout the school year based on the needs of students. Themes could include:
  • Friendship
  • Stress / anxiety
  • Social skills
  • Deployment
  • Goal-setting
Individual Counseling:
Students meet with us individually to discuss issues in a safe, positive, and confidential setting. Typically, students work out problems within 1-3 sessions, though some students may need ongoing support or community interventions.  Referrals are made by teachers, parents, or administration.  Students self-refer by completing a referral slip and placing it in the envelope next to our office doors.

Consultation:
We are available to meet with parents/guardians and teachers to discuss challenges that might be interfering with a student’s social, emotional, and academic success.

Community Resource Assistance:
Prince William County offers a variety of resources and community services to help students and families thrive.  Please don’t hesitate to ask for help in locating an outside resource for your child or your family.
